Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Garlanded sarcophagus. L. 217 cm x W. 104 cm H 132 cm. Roman Period, 2nd century, Perge. The garlands are carried by statues of Nike standing on a gryphon at the corners, holding a palm branch, and Erotes standing on dolphins along the sides. Theatre masks and Medusa heads further adorn the scene. The sarcophagus had been illegally excavated and smuggled to New York, from where it was returned in 1994. This type of sarcophagus is also called Pampyhylia Type and was an original invention of sculptors from Perge.
