English: A deserted airplane hangar, formerly used to service aircraft flying in and out of Whalers Bay in Deception Island. The island is a volcanic caldera (a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses) that erupted in the late 1960s, forcing all the facilities at Whalers Bay (including the airfield and hangar, a British scientific station, a British Customs House, and a Norwegian whaling station) to be abandoned. Deception Island is one of the South Shetland Islands, located to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula. An Antarctic Fur seal lounges on the beach in front of the hangar. The Fur seal is one of five species of seals on the Antarctic Peninsula and adjacent islands; the other four are the Weddell, the Crabeater, the Elephant, and the Leopard seal.
