Summary

[edit]
Description

The Antonov-2 is an old Russian biplane that has been hugely successful, sold more than 19 thousand and most are still flying today more than 70 years after the type first flew.

It was designed to be rugged, reliable and versatile, whether as a passenger carrier (civilian or military), cargo plane of crop duster. It can fly as slow as 25 mph and in a strong wind actually fly backwards.

The cockpit, seen here, is basic but functional with helpful stickers explaining the Russian dials and switches. Although very common in former Soviet Block countries there are only a small number of An-2's in the Western World.

It was a pleasure to get inside one at the Moryavia air museum near the former RAF base at Kinloss, Morayshire, Scotland where it has been carefully restored.
