Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The booklet one gets at the museum explains that ivory plaques like this one were so expensive that they sometimes were used twice. It first held a (probably) Lombard set of fable animals in an entwined pattern, from the 8th century. The holes must have held pearls or stones. A century later the other side was used and decorated the front of a book. The baptism of Christ now adorns it, with the hand of God appearing from the clouds and the dove of the Holy Spirit.
