| Description |
I just finished "The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)" by astrophysicist Katie Mack. In this lively, sometimes funny book, Dr. Mack describes the possible fates that await our universe in the far future. Thanks to CERN and space telescopes, is a golden age for observational physics, but there is still a lot of missing pieces. Perhaps we live in a cyclic universe, which will reverse expansion and collapse into a Big Crunch, perhaps reborn as a new Big Bang. Or perhaps the cosmos will continue to expand until entropy ultimately rules over a cold, dark universe. Of course, these options are only two of the possibilities -- the universe could rip itself apart with no notice (which would be spectacularly apropos for 2020, if it were not for the ironly that time itself would have no meaning if the universe were destroyed). But I digress. Choice for the follow up book was easy. Seemed to be the perfect time to read "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" (1980) by Douglas Adams |
