Igneous dikes are planar to irregularly-planar intrusions that cut across country rocks. They can be thin or extremely thick; they can be vertically- or obliquely-oriented. The rock seen here is from a zoned aplite-pegmatite dike that intruded anorthosite. Aplite is a finely-crystalline dike rock having a granitic composition. Pegmatite is a very coarsely-crystalline igneous rock, usually granitic. Host rocks: Laramie Anorthosite Complex, Middle Proterozoic, ~1.4 Ga Locality: roadcut on the northern side of Route 34, ~0.9 to 1.0 miles west of milepost 25, southwest of Poe Mountain & northeast of Morton Pass, Sybille Canyon, Laramie Range, southeastern Wyoming, USA |
