Summary
[edit]DescriptionArchaeopteryx lithographica (Solenhofener Specimen).jpg |
English: Almost complete skeleton of Archaeopteryx lithographica (original fossil - not a cast), on display at the 2009 Munich Mineral Days. This specimen is called “the sixth specimen” or “Solnhofen specimen”. Its exact provenance is unknown, but it is for sure that it comes from the Solnhofen lithographic limestones of the Altmühl River Valley (southern Franconian Alb, Bavaria, Germany), i. e. the same stratigraphic interval and geographic area as most of the other known specimens of Archaeopteryx. It has been made the type specimen of Wellnhoferia grandis, a genus and species erected in 2001,[1]
but this new assignment is not accepted by most paleontologists.
