Description
Français : Buste d’Emilien Archambaud portant sa vareuse avec des épaulettes à franges du 137e régiment d’infanterie dans lequel il avait effectué son service militaire en 1907-1908. Ce buste est un dessin réalisé au fusain probablement après 1918.

Emilien Archambaud a été l’un des derniers soldats français tués de la première guerre mondiale. Il a effectué toute la durée de la guerre en tant que simple soldat et a été tué le vendredi 8 novembre 1918, « Tué à l’ennemi » comme il est dit officiellement. Affecté au 264e régiment d’infanterie, il est tombé à l’âge de 31 ans dans la commune de Saint-Marceau lors de la bataille de Mézières (Charleville-Mézières) dans les Ardennes qui a duré du 8 au 11 novembre à 11 heures, heure à laquelle l’armistice à pris effet.

Emilien, Eugène, Léon Archambaud était né le 30 avril 1887 à Vouvant en Vendée, s’était marié en 1913 et habitait avec sa femme à La Sauzaie, un hameau de la commune de Saint-Xandre près de La Rochelle. Il avait eu une fille en 1914 et en a eu une autre post mortem en 1919. A sa dernière permission, il avait dit, comme beaucoup de soldats, qu’il ne reviendrait pas. Emilien Archambaud était un micro cultivateur et sa femme tenait l’épicerie du hameau.
