Description

Archimedes sp. - fossil fenestrate bryozoan in the Mississippian of Kentucky, USA.

Bryozoans are sessile, benthic, colonial, filter-feeding lophophorates. They first appear as fossils in the Late Cambrian and are still alive today in the Holocene. Most bryozoans constructed a calcareous skeleton, which is readily preserved in the fossil record. Fossil bryozoan skeletons are often highly fragmented.

The corkscrew structure seen here is from a fenestrate bryozoan, a group that ranges from the Ordovician to the Triassic. During life, the corkscrew-like section of skeleton had thin, lace-like sheets extending from the winding edge of the screw (see this reconstruction: <a href="https://vmnhpaleontology.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/2009-09-06g.jpg" rel="nofollow">vmnhpaleontology.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/2009-09-06g.jpg</a>). In the fossil record, the corkscrew is typically found with the thin sheets detached, as in this example.

The surrounding rock is fossiliferous limestone.
