Summary[edit]

Description
English: As seen on a December 2020 morning: the view westward down Jefferson Avenue from in front of The Palms Apartments serves as a visual architectural timeline through the history of downtown Detroit. At left is seen the Sibley House (1848), the wood-frame side-gabled Greek Revival residence built by Judge Solomon Sibley (1769-1816), a local politico who served as Detroit's first mayor among other offices, and lived in by several successive generations of his family. The Sibley House now serves as parsonage for the building at center, Gorgon W. Lloyd's splendid Gothic-style Christ Church (1863). At right in the distance is the Renaissance Center complex (1977-1981), the centerpiece of the late 20th-century revitalization scheme for downtown Detroit. The RenCen was conceived initially in the Brutalist style, but a 2001 renovation and partial redesign brought the architecture more in line with Late Modernism.
