The 11th day of Armenian presidential election protests. At 7:30 am, the peaceful "camp-in" protest at Liberty Square in Yerevan was violently ended by Armenian special forces which used truncheons and electric shock devices to disperse the crowd of around 1,000. At 12:30 pm, a new crowd marches to the French Embassy in a spontaneous demonstration, barricade themselves using abandoned police buses, and grow in number to around 150,000. By 12 am, about 2,000 demonstrators are left barricaded. In this picture (12:15 am), tens of activists can be seen at the intersection of Mashdots Ave and G. Lusavorich Street, while the bulk of the 2,000 demonstrators remain a quarter mile southwest on G. Lusavorich Street at Miasnikyan Square. Some of these tens of people loot a nearby grocery store. The opposition claims that they are agent provocateurs sent by the government. Meanwhile, the nearest police -- positioned 2/3 of a kilometer away at Shahumyan square -- allow anarchy to reign in this area for several hours, as government TV crews film tens of people looting the grocery store. |
