Description The Armley Hippo (or Leeds Hippopotamus), on display in the Leeds City Museum, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It is a fossilised skeleton, and an example of the subspecies known as the great northern hippopotamus, or Hippopotamus amphibius, which has long been extinct in the UK. It was dug up in 1851 by brickfield workmen in Armley, Leeds. Showing the mounted skeleton, with 19th-century taxidermy and people viewed through the glass case behind.
