Heraldic stained glass roundel, circa 1540, Mapperton Church, Dorset, showing the arms of w:John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford, KG, (c.1485-1555) Lord High Admiral and Lord Privy Seal. Circumscribed by the Garter, as seen on his Garter stall plate, St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. John Russell was born at Berwick, Dorset, his father being a wine importer based at Weymouth, Dorset. Quarterly of four:

  • 1: 1st grand quarter, quarterly of 4:
    • 1&4: Argent, a lion rampant gules on a chief sable three escallops of the first (Russell)
    • 2&3: Azure, a tower argent (de la Tour);
  • 2: Gules, three herrings hauriant argent (Herringham);
  • 3: Sable, a griffin segreant between three cross crosslets argent (Froxmere);
  • 4: Sable, three chevronels ermine with a crescent for difference (Wyse).
