Summary[edit]

Description
English: Fool the Axis – Use Prophylaxis: Prophylaxis prevents veneral disease!
  • Format: Poster 55,9 x 71,1 cm;
  • Artist: Arthur Szyk (Polish: Artur Szyk; 1894 – 1951), a Polish-born Jewish artist who worked primarily as a book illustrator and political artist throughout his career
  • Published: 1942
  • Publisher/printer: John Wyeth & Brother, Inc. Philadelphia Pa. USA
  • American World War II propaganda poster promoting the use of prophylactics by depicting grotesque caricatures of Italian fascist leader Benito Mussolini, Japanese general and prime minister Hideki Tojo, and German nazi leader Adolf Hitler, each representing a venereal disease with portions of uniforms missing to reveal skin lesions caused by the disease, each figure holds a large syringe.
The master of political caricature, unloads both barrels on World War II’s Terrible Threesome: Mussolini, Tojo, and Hitler. In this public service announcement designed to protect American G.I.’s from the ravages of venereal disease, he portrays the Axis leaders as already in the advanced stages of Syphilis and Gonorrhea. They are an odious mess of chancroids and festering blisters. Both Tojo and Hitler clutch hypodermic syringes the size of missiles, while Mussolini parades a wanton harlot puppet upon whose lower body parts is displayed a skull and crossbones.“Prophylaxis Prevents Venereal Disease” reads the lower headline. Certainly such an irreverent take on what has always been a serious problem for soldiers, must have been met with delight by our boys “over there”.
