Summary

[edit]
Description Digital recreation of hardcover first-edition of John Ashbery's 1979 poetry collection As We Know, published by Viking Press.

Photos of this first edition cover can be seen here and here. Note that the cover found on later editions published by Penguin Books are virtually identical except for the addition of the (copyrighted) Penguin Books logo in the upper righthand corner; see e.g. photos of the Penguin paperback edition. The first edition by Viking Press did not include any logos or other copyrighted material on its cover.

In order to achieve a higher resolution than a scan of the cover would achieve, I used PhotoShop to superimpose the title text over the digital scan of the original painting found on Commons: This file was derived from: Pieter Jansz. Saenredam St. Mary's Square and St. Mary's Church at Utrecht 1663.jpg
Author The cover design is credited to Beth Tondreau; the painting is St. Mary's Square and St. Mary's Church, Utrecht (1663) by Pieter Jansz. Saenredam
Permission
(Reusing this file)

No permission required because the image does not meet the threshold of originality. It combines a straightforward/unmodified reproduction of a public domain painting with a very small amount of text. Please note that, although this cover design is in the public domain, the contents of the book itself are copyrighted.

Licensing

[edit]
This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This work is ineligible for copyright and therefore in the public domain because it consists entirely of information that is common property and contains no original authorship.

This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag.

Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag.
