English: The Asian Barred Owlet, scientifically referred to as the Cuckoo owlet, represents a pygmy owl species indigenous to the forests and shrublands spanning from mainland Southeast Asia to the foothills of the Himalayas in northern Pakistan. This diminutive owl boasts a relatively larger size within the pygmy owl category, measuring between 22 and 25 cm. Typically observed during daylight hours, it perches on exposed locations such as telephone wires, exhibiting a medium-sized, rotund physique with overall brown plumage and barred underparts. Distinguished from the Collared Owlet, the Asian Barred lacks false eye spots on the back of its head, showcases darker brown barring on the sides, and possesses a larger stature. Emitting a distinctive call, characterized by a long series of mellow toots, primarily during the night, this owl can often be pinpointed in daylight through the reactions of mobbing songbirds.
