Summary[edit]
DescriptionAstride The Lion (2862413027).jpg |
Detail of wall painting in the old Church of St. Mary of Zion, Axum, Ethiopia. Regular viewers will know I'm enchanted by the perky horses in Ethiopian religious art. I'm equally fond of lions in Ethiopian paintings. Alas, they aren't as common as horses, so I didn't bring back as many lion photos. This is the first of my photos that really does justice to that great feline, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the Ethiopian black-maned lion! Aren't those little lion ears and that big 19th-century-style lion mustache the cutest things you've ever seen in an Ethiopian painting of a man riding a lion? Lacking a saddle, our intrepid lion-rider has a firm grip on the lion's mane. Sensibly, he has opted to straddle the lion instead of riding side-saddle, as it were. |
