Summary

[edit]
Description

Astrophyllitic agpaite (peralkaline nepheline syenite with astrophyllite) from the Devonian of Russia. (centimeter scale)

Dark brown & golden-brown = astrophyllite. ~Reddish = eudialyte Whitish/grayish = nepheline

Far-northwestern Russia’s Kola Peninsula is famous for an abundance of unusual rocks and rare minerals. This area contains the Khibina Massif, a large alkaline igneous pluton intruded into Precambrian basement rocks of the Fennoscandian Shield/Baltic Shield. The intrusion took place during the Caledonian Orogeny - its rocks date to the Late Devonian (~362-365 million years old).

The rock shown above is a pegmatitic agpaite (= pegmatitic peralkaline nepheline syenite) with part of a large, radiating cluster of intensely lustrous, dark brown to golden-brown astrophyllite blades. Astrophyllite is a rare mineral having the formula (K,Na)3(Fe,Mn)7Ti2(SiO3)8(O,OH)7 - potassium sodium iron manganese titanium hydroxy-oxysilicate.

Geologic unit: Khibina Massif, Late Devonian, ~362-365 Ma

Locality: unrecorded site in the Kola Peninsula, Murmansk Region, far-northwestern Russia
