Description

I am visiting San Francisco for the Pride weekend - one that turned out to be the most historic of them all, thanks to the Supreme Court rulings that legal same-sex marriages cannot be denied federal benefits, and that Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriages in California in late 2008, is dead on a legal technicality.

Here is Kamala Harris, who had served as San Francisco's district attorney before becoming California's first female Attorney General. When the federal district court struck down Proposition 8, Harris refused to appeal the ruling on the state's behalf, finding no constitutional justification for the law; the appeals were instead filed by the Yes on 8 campaign, which led to the Supreme Court throwing out the appeals on the campaign's lack of standing. And when gay marriages finally got legal again in California two days before this parade, Harris officiated the very first one, for Kristin Perry and Sandra Stier at San Francisco City Hall.
