Description

Aulopora microbuccinata Watkins, 1959 encrusting Paraspirifer bownockeri Stewart, 1927 - colonial coral encrusting a brachiopod from the Devonian of Ohio, USA.

Auloporids are a group of extinct tabulate corals. They consist of calcareous colonies of hard substrate-encrusting, trumpet-shaped corallites. They first appear in the Ordovician and go extinct in the Permian. The auloporids shown above are encrusting a moderately large spiriferid brachiopod from Ohio's famous Silica Shale. Both the brachiopod and the corals have been pyritized and/or coated with pyrite. Pyritization is a type of fossil replacement, involving the dissolution of the original hard parts of an organism, followed by crystallization of another mineral in their place - in this case, pyrite (FeS2 - iron sulfide) ("fool's gold"). Pyritization and pyrite coatings are common in the Silica Shale.

Classification of corals: Animalia, Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Tabulata, Auloporidae

Classification of brachiopod: Animalia, Brachiopoda, Articulata (a.k.a. Rhynchonelliformea), Spiriferida, Hysterolitidae

Stratigraphy: Silica Shale (Silica Formation), Middle Devonian

Locality: Medusa Cement Quarry, Sylvania, northwestern Lucas County, northwestern Ohio, USA
