Summary[edit]
DescriptionAutism Services, Inc. - fmr Telephone Building, Rauch & Stoeckl Printing et al. - Buffalo, New York - 20210111.jpg |
English: Autism Services, Inc., 124 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. Built in 1912 to a design by the New York firm of McKenzie, Voorhees & Gmelin, this is, like most local telephone exchanges of similar vintage, an example of the so-called "Stripped Classical" style of architecture then popular for institutional buildings. The style implies a mélange of Greek and Roman motifs presented in subtle and simplified form, and true to the aesthetic, ornamentation comes in the form of a cornice with a continuous meander relief, undergirded by courses of egg-and-dart molding and dentils. Additionally, ornamental masonry work forms the vertical spaces between the windows into stylized pilaster strips, and a modest architrave frames the front entrance. The New York Telephone Company occupied the building until 1932, then after a three-year period of vacancy it was subdivided into industrial space (a process facilitated by its sturdy concrete construction), most of which was taken up by the Rauch & Stoeckl Printing Company and, later, Smith W. Hazleton Publishing. A 1970 renovation saw the building converted to a mix of apartments and office space. Subsequent occupants include the original location of the Elmwood Village Charter School (2006-12) and as the Buffalo branch facility of Autism Services, Inc., offering quality-of-life and educational services for those on the spectrum. |
