świętych Piotra i Pawła. Zorganizowali więc w 1905 r. konkurs, do którego zaprosili czterech architektów: Teodora Talowskiego, Józefa Pokutyńskiego, Antoniego Wiwulskiego i wiedeńczyka Juliusza Meyredera. Jest on trójnawową bazyliką z krótkim prezbiterium, nad którą dominuje usytuowana z boku, sześćdziesięciometrowa wieża. Wnętrze podzielone zostało romańskimi arkadami i nakryte sklepieniem krzyżowym. Bogaty wystrój świątyni, a szczególnie polichromia, mozaiki i marmurowe kolumny nawiązują do sztuki bizantyjskiej i włoskiego romanizmu. Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa został podniesiony przez papieża Jana XXIII do godności bazyliki mniejszej. the Jesuits, officially known as the Society of Jesus, are a male religious order established in 1540 in Rome by St Ignatius of loyola. They were brought to Poland, initially to Braniewo, in 1565 by Cardinal Stanisław Hozjusz. In Kraków, the Jesuits first acquired the church of St Barbara in Mariacki Square (1583), and at the turn of the 16th century commenced the construction of the Church of St Peter and St Paul. In 1868 the Jesuit order purchased land in the Wesoła district, next to Kopernika Street, where they built a small chapel and a monastery with a noviciate section. At the beginning of the 20th century they decided to build a church, and in 1905 they arranged for a competition, to which they invited four architects: Teodor Talowski, Józef Pokutyński, Antoni Wiwulski and Julius Meyreder from Vienna. A Jesuit monk and artist Józef Krupierz also submitted a design. However, the clients were not satisfied with the results. They turned to Franciszek Mączyński, who developed three consecutive versions of the concept plan between 1907 and 1909. When the final version was approved, the church was built between 1909 and 1912. In this modernist creation, Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque motifs are seamlessly merged into one. A 60-metre tower, situated at the side, dominates the whole. The Jesuit church is a three-aisle basilica with a short chancel. The interior was divided with Romanesque arcades and covered with a cross vault. Rich decorations, particularly the murals, mosaics, and marble columns, emulate Byzantine art and Italian Romanesque style. The author of the polychromy and stained glass windows (the latter destroyed during the war) was Jan Bukowski, while Piotr Stachiewicz and leonard Stroynowski designed the mosaics. The altars are the creations of Karol Hukan, and the figures in the rood arch were sculpted by Jan Raszka. The present stained-glass widows were designed in 1945 by Jan Skąpski. the total effect was enhanced by placing the main entrance at the side of the tower, in Kopernika Street. Adorning the stone doorway is a magnificent statue of Christ, by Xawery Dunikowski. Many 20th-century art historians consider the church to be the finest work of Kraków’s early 20th-century religious architecture. In 1960, Pope John XXII granted the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus the status of a basilica minor.
