Description
Français : Abraham Ortelius est un cartographe et géographe brabançon. Son Theatrum Orbis Terrarum est considéré comme le premier véritable atlas moderne, un nouveau type de livre qui réunit un ensemble cohérent de cartes. Dans sa première édition de 1570, l’atlas comprenait 53 cartes, puis 167 en 1612. L’auteur, soucieux de n’indiquer sur ses cartes que des lieux explorés, mêle parfois à la rigueur scientifique des descriptions inspirées de témoignages et récits. La Tartarie ici présentée, s’étend de la mer Caspienne à l’ouest, jusqu’à la Chine et à la Russie à l’est. Le Japon, dessiné horizontalement, et la côte ouest de l’Amérique du Nord sont bien visibles. Ortelius est le premier à inclure le mythique détroit d’Aniane entre l’Asie et l’Amérique.
