Français : Cette carte fut réalisée en 1587 par Rumold Mercator à partir du grand planisphère en 18 feuilles que son père, Gérard Mercator, avait publié en 1569. Il s’agit donc d’une réduction pouvant être insérée dans un atlas. La Terre est divisée en deux hémisphères qui présentent respectivement le Nouveau Monde, dont les contours restent encore à préciser, et l’Ancien dont la connaissance ne cesse de s’approfondir. La carte met en évidence les découvertes considérables faites par les Européens en l’espace d’un siècle mais aussi les larges espaces qui demeurent inconnus, notamment la zone australe où l’on imagine un immense continent lestant le globe terrestre. Elle témoigne également de la codification de la cartographie dans la seconde moitié du 16e siècle, principalement sous l’impulsion de ses protagonistes flamands tels Gérard Mercator ou Abraham Ortelius : ce type de mappemonde connut en effet une large postérité. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo
