Description
Français : Après deux circumnavigations effectuées entre 1822 et 1829, Dumont d’Urville rêve d’une troisième expédition océanienne. Louis-Philippe lui en donne l’opportunité en y ajoutant la mission de pousser jusqu’en Antarctique. Le capitaine de vaisseau accepte, même s’il préfère « trois années de navigation sous le ciel embrasé des contrées équatoriales à deux mois de séjour dans les régions glaciales ». Partis en 1837, les équipages de l’Astrolabe et la Zélée aperçoivent le 20 janvier 1840 des points noirs dans la neige, promesse d’une terre ferme. Le lendemain, louvoyant parmi les icebergs dont les « murailles droites dépassaient de beaucoup nos mâtures », deux canots abordent le Rocher du débarquement dans un spectacle « tout à la fois grandiose et effrayant ». En hommage à son épouse Adèle, d’Urville nomme Terre Adélie le dernier territoire terrestre encore inexploré. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo
