Description |
Français : Bartolomé de Las Casas est le plus célèbre et l’un des plus précoces défenseurs des Amérindiens. Sa Très brève relation de la destruction des Indes, publiée pour la première fois en 1552, raconte les sévices qu’imposaient les Espagnols aux peuples autochtones. Cette illustration se rapporte à l’invasion du Guatemala débutée en 1524. Las Casas y décrit un capitaine qui ne nourrissait pas ses alliés indiens, les autorisant uniquement à manger les prisonniers d’autres tribus : « il y avait ainsi dans son camp une impressionnante boucherie de chair humaine ; en sa présence on tuait des enfants et on les rôtissait ; on tuait un homme pour n’en garder que les mains et les pieds, qui étaient considérés comme les meilleurs morceaux ». Le passage relate que le même capitaine faisait porter des pièces d’artillerie et des ancres de bateau à dos d’homme sur plus de 500 km. En arrière-plan, on voit la capture d’Indiens destinés à être vendus comme esclaves au Pérou.
D’abord publiée en 1598, cette traduction latine change le titre de l’œuvre et est illustrée par Théodore de Bry. En insistant beaucoup sur la culpabilité des Espagnols, cette édition crée une légende noire qui permet aux autres nations colonisatrices (Hollande, France, Angleterre) d’apparaître, à tort, comme moins barbares. - Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo |
