Description |
Français : L’estampe décrit le comptoir Xavier le long de la côte des Esclaves, nom donné à la région de l’actuel Bénin et du Togo. Proche de la rade de Juda, le comptoir regroupe quatre colonies : au centre, le comptoir français, à gauche le portugais, à droite l’anglais et au premier plan à droite le comptoir hollandais. Au-dessus se trouve la cour du roi africain, en affaire avec les Européens pour la traite des esclaves, principalement destinés aux Caraïbes pour les plantations de sucre. Le père Labat, sans être jamais allé en Afrique, fait l’éloge de la présence européenne sur le continent africain, apportant la religion et la civilisation à ces peuples « barbares ».
