Français : Imaginé dès les années 1880 mais longtemps remis, le chemin de fer Congo-Océan (CFCO) est finalement construit entre 1921 et 1934. Outre son intérêt pour l’exploitation des ressources du Moyen-Congo, la ligne est présentée dans cet album de presse comme un symbole de la mission civilisatrice de la France, « donnant un métier à des dizaines de milliers d’indigènes du Moyen-Congo ». En réalité, il s’agit d’une des réalisations coloniales les plus meurtrières d’Afrique : environ 20 000 morts pour 100 à 120 000 travailleurs forcés, enrôlés parfois depuis l’Oubangui-Chari (actuelle République centrafricaine) à plus de 1 500km. Après plusieurs mois de trajet et « d’acclimatation », les ouvriers portaient, creusaient et terrassaient à la main, dans des conditions de vie misérables (sous-nutrition, épidémies).
Ils étaient surveillés par des « capitas », contremaîtres parfois autochtones, et souvent issus d’autres colonies, eux-mêmes dirigés par l’administration et les entreprises françaises. La majeure partie des difficultés était concentrée dans la traversée du Mayombé, petit massif montagneux couvert d’une jungle épaisse particulièrement difficile d’accès. Les conséquences économiques de la construction du CFCO déstabilisèrent l’économie vivrière par le retrait d’une partie non négligeable de la main d’œuvre masculine de cette région très peu dense. Après la construction, le train servit d’abord à drainer les richesses du sol et du sous-sol vers l’Europe, poussant les populations à travailler pour les entreprises minières coloniales, quitte à importer des biens de subsistance. |
