Français : Alfred Wegener, astronome et météorologue allemand, est connu pour sa théorie de la « dérive des continents » publiée en 1915. Elle explique que notre globe n’est pas un milieu stable et permanent. Les continents de sal (ou sial) qui dérivent, reposent sur une couche plus dense de sima. Au départ soudés, leur séparation créa un océan. Sa théorie s’appuie sur la complémentarité observée entre les côtes de l’Afrique et de l’Amérique, sur certaines structures géologiques et sur la présence de faunes communes aux ères primaire et secondaire. L’émergence des montagnes proviendrait du choc de continents et non de plissements anciens de l’écorce terrestre.
