Description |
Français : Mathématicien, astronome, géographe et cosmographe allemand, Andreas Cellarius produit en 1660, puis en 1661 en une seconde émission, un luxueux atlas céleste. Le grand in-folio est orné de 29 grandes planches gravées sur cuivre très élaborées, rehaussées de couleurs. Cet ouvrage remarquable développe les visions du monde établies par Ptolémée, Tycho Brahé et Copernic. Une de ses plus belles figures illustre le nouveau modèle de rotation des astres autour du soleil, l’héliocentrisme, dont Cellarius est partisan. Les planètes sont accompagnées de leur satellite et l’on peut observer les 4 lunes de Jupiter découvertes par Galilée. L’astronome polonais, Copernic, est représenté dans l’angle en bas à droite de la figure et fait face à Aristarque de Samos en bas à gauche. Le savant grec fut l’un des premiers à avoir suggéré le mouvement de la Terre autour du Soleil.
Trésor de l’âge d’or de la cartographie céleste, cet atlas est le premier du genre publié en Hollande avant le 19e siècle. Il fait partie d’un vaste programme de description de la Terre et du cosmos engagé presque cent ans auparavant par Gérard Mercator (1512-1594), mathématicien et géographe. Parmi les nombreuses planches, une dizaine a été exécutée par le graveur, cartographe et éditeur flamand Johannes van Loon ; celle exposée ici n’étant pas signée.
