Français : Après la publication du Sidereus nuncius, les observations de la Lune se multiplient et alimentent un débat sur la nature de l’astre. Quelle que soit l’obédience des savants, une analogie de convention avec la Terre s’impose. Les premières cartographies de la Lune apparaissent, dont la toponymie constitue un enjeu politique.
Jan Hevelius, un astronome polonais, pousse très loin cette analogie, en reprenant les codes de la cartographie terrestre. Les « mers » qui apparaissent sombres sur la Lune sont laissées blanches sur la carte, à l’inverse des montagnes foncées sur la carte et brillantes dans le ciel. De même, plutôt que de donner des noms de monarques et de savants dont le choix ferait polémique, il organise le territoire lunaire sur le modèle du monde antique, centré sur une mare mediterraneum, en y ajoutant des lieux chrétiens (Sinaï en bas). Mais ce sera finalement la proposition concurrente de G. Riccioli qui sera retenue jusqu’à nos jours. Enfin, notons que cette carte montre des parties parfois cachées (bande en haut à droite et en bas à gauche). C’est la libration lunaire qu’Hevelius est le premier à mettre au jour : du fait d’une vitesse de rotation légèrement différente de la Terre, le satellite montre un peu plus de la moitié de sa surface par cycle.- Bibliothèque municipale de Lyon, mis en ligne sur Numelyo |
