Baba Sodal temple Jalandhar Punjab India

Summary[edit]

Description
English: City Jalandhar is renowned for its very famous annual fair called “Sodal Mela”. It is held on Anant Chodas. More than one and half million devotees mark their presence to pay obeisance to an immortal legend named Baba Sodal. People from all walks of life attend the festival. The fair is held to in order to pray for the health and longevity of children. It is assumed that a woman used pond water for her domestic chores. She was the mother of legendary Baba Sodal (child at that time), who used to accompany her to the pond. He started playing mischief by making clay balls and throwing them at his mother. When utterly disturbed, the mother cursed him badly and asked him to jump into the pond. Baba Sodal made her mother repeat the rebuking words and then in pursuit of obeying her, he jumped into the pond and never reappeared. By hearing the hue and cry of his mother, people gathered around. After a relentless search, there was no sign of the boy. It is said that the child appeared in the form of a holy snake and bid his farewell from this mortal world. To date, the serpent form of Baba Sodal is worshipped in Jalandhar.
