Summary[edit]

Description
English: This large retail building fills the triangular half of the block at the corner of NW Market St and 22nd Ave NW. It was one of several such large "strip mall" buildings built along Market Street in the late 1920s, which was becoming Ballard's primary retail street. This building was built for the Barnum-Lemcke Investment Company in 1927 and designed by the lesser known Seattle firm of Hancock & Lockman. Their original plans called for a building clad in terracotta that would mirror the nearby Eagles Building that could eventually carry 5 floors, but the plans were soon scaled back to the current brick and cast-stone design. The corner room at 2201 Market was originally home to the second location of Seattle men's clothing store chain Klopfenstein's.
