Summary

[edit]
Description
English: * The Bangkok Tutelar Shrine, located to the north of the Bangkok City Pillar Shrine on Lak Mueang Road in Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang Subdistrict, Phra Nakhon District, Bangkok.
  • The shrine houses the statues of the five tutelar gods of Bangkok.
  • The statues were originally housed by three shrines built during the reign of Rama I. In the reign of Rama V, the three shrines were torn down and the statues were removed to this shrine.
  • The statues of the five gods are in this photo. From left to right, the gods are:
    • เจ้าหอกลอง (Chao Ho Klong; literally "Lord of the Drum Towers"), in charge of the drum towers used for timekeeping, providing warning of incidents, etc.
    • พระทรงเมือง (Phra Song Mueang; literally "His Divinity the Bearer of the City"), providing convenience in public administration.
    • พระกาฬไชยศรี (Phra Kan Chaiyasi; literally "His Divinity Chaiyasi the Dark"; the name chaiyasi literally means "victory and prosperity"), a subordinate of the hell overlord Yama, bearing the duty to bring the dead to the hell for trial and judgment of their sins. He rides upon a barn owl, the bird which brings death according to traditional belief.
    • พระเสื้อเมือง (Phra Suea Mueang; literally "His Divinity the Ancestor of the City"), supervising military affairs.
    • เจ้าเจตคุปต์ (Chao Chettakhup; literally "Lord Chettakhup"), a Thai version of the Hindu god Citragupta, the register of the hell.
