On June 5 1866 Te Kooti was deported to the Chatham Islands. Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Tūruki was a Christian Māori who joined the government forces in fighting Pai Mārire in November 1865. But when the fighting ended he was suspected of being a spy and was deported to the Chatham Islands (Wharekauri), along with his captured Pai Mārire adversaries. While captive on the Chatham Islands Te Kooti experienced visions. He combined teachings from the Bible with Māori concepts to found a religious faith called Ringatū (the upraised hand). More information can be found at <a href="https://nzhistory.govt.nz/war/te-kootis-war" rel="nofollow">nzhistory.govt.nz/war/te-kootis-war</a> It is not clear whether this banner was one used by Te Kooti, or how and when it came into the hands of the New Zealand Government.
