Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sediments are any loose grains at the Earth's surface. Names are given to different size classes of sediments. The finest-grained sediments are clay (less than 1 / 256 of a millimeter). Coarser-grained than clay are silt (1 /256 to 1 / 16 of a millimeter) and sand (1 / 16 to 2 millimeters in size). Sediments larger than sand are called gravel. Small gravel is referred to as "granules" (2 to 4 millimeters in size). Larger gravel are pebbles (4 to 64 millimeters), cobbles (64 to 256 millimeters), and boulders (larger than 256 millimeters).

Many non-rocky marine shorelines are dominated by sand-sized sediments. Seen here is a gravelly marine shoreline at Yaquina Head, Oregon. Most of the clasts are cobbles, but boulders are also present. The rocks have eroded from the Ginkgo Basalt, one of many lava flows in the Miocene-aged Columbia River Flood Basalt.

Flood basalts are vast outpourings of lava from one or more large fractures in the crust. This rare type of volcanism is not occurring on Earth at present, but ancient flood basalt provinces that can be examined - for example, the latest Cretaceous-aged Deccan Traps of India and the latest Permian Siberian Traps of Russia. Flood lavas are also known on Mercury, Venus, and the Moon.

Locality: marine shoreline on the southern side of Yaquina Head, coastal Oregon, USA
