Summary[edit]

Description

the fine 18th century ali gholi agha bath house became one of the sadder architectural encounters of the trip.

I was anxious to find a working hammam but it turned out that all the communal baths in isfahan have been shut down since the islamic revolution. for hygienic reasons. I'll let you be the judge of that argument.

so an islamic revolution destroys islamic culture. it should come as no surprise.

you'll still find smaller neighbourhood baths where people wash separately but nothing like this. the ali gholi agha bath was in operation until just 15 years ago. today, it suffers the worst fate known to architecture: it's a museum. complete with wax figurines of the exotic people using it in the 18th century as if to obliterate the part it played in the community until recently.
