Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Batterson-Kleckner House, 2254 Main Street, Buffalo, New York, September 2020. Built in 1899, the house is a typical example of the Queen Anne architecture that was very popular around the turn of the century and which is the predominant style in the Parkside East Historic District. Interesting features that deviate somewhat from the stylistic norm include the hipped roof, the front portion of which descends from the façade from a false gable and ends in a moderately overhanging eave, as well as the rugged-textured concrete block that comprises the pilasters supporting the porch roof. The bowed bay window on the second floor is faced in vertical wooden slats, to match the first-floor façade and as a contrast to the clapboard that covers the other exterior walls. Like many Parkside homes, the house's early history was characterized by a parade of new owners every few years; its first resident, Canadian-born produce merchant Nelson Batterson (1851-1931), only stayed for a year. In 1916, the house was purchased by Dr. Frank C. Kleckner (1877-1930), who used it until his death both for his own residence and his ear, nose and throat practice; his widow Anna stayed on in the house until moving to Florida in 1943. Subsequently, it was the McKendry Funeral Home for a time in the 1950s and '60s.
