Summary
[edit]DescriptionBear's Lodge.jpg |
English: The Bear's Lodge, more commonly known as the Devils Tower, is about 700 feet (250m.) tall and tops out at 5112 feet (1558m.) above sea-level. By way of comparison elevation at the entrance to the Devils Tower National Monument, the first such monument created by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 under the Act for the Preservation of American Antiquities, about a mile (1.6km.) away as the crow flies, is at 3850 feet (1174m.). Much of that difference is in the final approach to the base of the tower which is quite steep as you can see from the photo. The decomposing rock field surrounding the base of the tower is quite common in my experience with peaks in the western US (at least in Colorado). The tower was and is sacred ground to many of the Plains Indian tribes, most notably the Lakota, where it was referred to as the "Bear's Lodge", as in the title of the photo, or "Bear's Tipi". For more geological and cultural information about the tower go to the National Park Service website at
