Notes |
This is the frontispiece to a series of seventeen plates showing the life of the Virgin Mary after Stradanus (New Hollstein 187-204). Two of the plates (6 and 12) are engraved by Jan II Collaert; the others by his brother Adriaen Collaert (New Hollstein 548-565). For two complete sets in BM collection (first state) see Nn,7.4.1-18 and 1858,0417.1373.1-18 (bound in a leather volume). They were first published in Antwerp by Adriaen Collaert himself around 1689; later re-worked and re-published by Johannes Galle in Antwerp (who re-engraved the plates coarsely or possibly replaced them by replica's, with exact same text and signatures, and the address of Johannes Galle) and Cornelius Martinus Spanoghe (as previous condition used in "Aldernouwkeurtigste verhandelingen der geschiedenissen van het Nieuwe Testament", except plate 14 of The Wedding at Cana). In Florence (Museo del Palazzo Pitti, inv. 14387) a painting by Tommaso Filigue of the Virgin and Child in a rosegarden surrounded by sixteen scenes after the print-series. Literature: A. Baroni and M. Sellink, 'Stradanus 1523-1605: Court artist of the Medici', exh.cat. Groeningemuseum Brugge 2008-2009, Turnhout, 2012, pp.314-322, cat.no.115-125. |

This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
