DescriptionBefore motherboards.jc.jpg |
When a CPU still consisted of hundreds (thousands?) of small logic modules - each about the size of a cigarette pack - these would be plugged into a large frame (through which ran plumbing for coolant) and then these logic modules would be inter-connected with wires. This was actually very useful as you could "trim" a wire by lengthening or shortening it to get the pulse timed just right in certain critical sections. When eventually millions of transistors could be placed on a single chip, all this wiring took place inside the chip - and then chips were inter-connected on a mother-board. Much less fun, but more reliable... |
