Summary[edit]

Description
English:
English: Picture of a Pennsylvania Dutch folk-character called the Belsnickel, taken in the 1950s at an event near Philadelphia to which young children were brought for the specific purpose of being scared into good behavior by this creature. The Belsnickel was said to leave lumps of coal and switches in the holiday stockings of children who behaved badly during the year. This particular figure is carrying a switch with which he threatened the children in the room. It was all kind of in good fun, and also kind of...not, so far as the kids were concerned.
