| Description |
English: Dit beulszwaard werd gebruikt bij het voltrekken van de doodstraf door onthoofding. Het heeft een botte punt en is dus niet gemaakt om mee te steken. Ook de inscripties op het blad maken duidelijk dat dit een beulszwaard is: ‘Justitia’ en ‘Justitiam’ (het Latijnse woord voor gerechtigheid) en de spreuk ‘'Reghter Reght Regh, God is Reghter en gij sijt knecht, Anno 1717, Goet doen en vreest niet.’ Daarnaast is op het blad een afbeelding van Vrouwe Justitia te zien. De beul, ook wel scherprechter genoemd, hanteerde het zwaard met twee handen. In de collectie van de Gevangenpoort bevinden zich zeven beulszwaarden. Dit exemplaar is afkomstig uit Utrecht. Helaas is niet bekend door welke beul het zwaard gebruikt is en wie ermee zijn onthoofd.
Onthoofdingen behoorden tot het begin van de 19de eeuw tot de strafpraktijk in Nederland, al werd de straf niet vaak opgelegd. Onthoofding met het zwaard was namelijk ‘voorbehouden’ aan mensen uit de hogere standen. Bekende voorbeelden zijn de graven van Horne en Egmont in 1568 en landsadvocaat Johan van Oldenbarnevelt in 1619. Ter dood veroordeelde misdadigers uit het gewone volk kregen meestal de strop – een straf die als bijzonder oneervol werd gezien.
