English: The Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur marks the greatest achievement of the Chola architects. The construction of this temple was inaugurated by the Chola King, Rajaraja I (985-1012 CE) possibly in the 19th regal year (1003-1004 CE). The Vimana of the gopuram soars to a height of 59.82meters over the ground. The gopuram has 13 talas(floors) and is surmounted by an octagonal sikhara. The Sikhara constitutes a cupolic dome (25 tons) and it rests on a single block of granite, weighing 80 tons. There is a circumambulatory path all around the sanctum housing a massive linga. |
