Summary[edit]
DescriptionBioturbated sandstone (Dakota Sandstone, Lower Cretaceous; Dinosaur Ridge, Colorado, USA) 8.jpg |
English: Invertebrate trace fossils in quartzose sandstone in the Cretaceous of Colorado, USA.
This outcrop is at Dinosaur Ridge (a section of the Dakota Hogback), a north-south trending ridge of eastward-dipping Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous rocks are present, tilted during the Laramide Orogeny in the Cenozoic. The exposure consists of structurally tilted beds of the Dakota Sandstone, a Lower Cretaceous succession of nearshore terrestrial to intertidal to shallow marine quartz sandstone deposits. Some Dakota Sandstone beds are heavily bioturbated, some with dinosaur tracks and some with invertebrate trace fossils. Reported invertebrate traces include Zoophycos, Arenicolites, Diplocraterion, and vertical burrows. These ichnogenera are shallow shoreface traces. From on-site signage: Trace Fossils The Dakota sandstones contain many tracks, trails, and burrows of worms and crustaceans that lived in the intertidal zone along the western seashore of the Western Interior Seaway. Although these animals were never preserved in the sand, the “traces” they left behind give us clues as to what kind of animals they were. The horizontal and vertical burrows are similar to those known from modern sandy beaches. Stratigraphy: Dakota Sandstone, Albian Stage, upper Lower Cretaceous Locality: eastern side of Dinosaur Ridge, south of Interstate 70 & north of the town of Morrison, west of Denver, north-central Colorado, USA |
