DescriptionBirds-eye view of Winona, Washington, circa 1909 - DPLA - fc1861122546439ca8513cd937dfa30e.jpg | Postcard photo of Winona, Washington looking north. Nearly all of the structures visible in this image do not exist today (2016). The rail line visible in the foreground was owned and operated by the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company (O. R. & N.), which had a railroad network between Portland and Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho. The Winona depot is visible on the far right immediately behind the water tower. Main Street is the street running north-south just left of the center of this image. Bridge Street runs east-west immediately north and parallel to the railroad tracks, while Orchard Street is the next street running east-west north of Bridge Street. The Palouse River is visible along the left side and bottom half of this image. The Winona Flour MIll Company is the tall white structure visible on the left side of this image. A long ditch was dug from a reservoir located on the Palouse River to the mill to supply the mill with water power. W. H. McTier had an interest in this mill until January 1905, when he sold his interest and moved to California. In October 1908, a gasoline engine was installed in the mill as an auxiliary to the water power since the volume of water supplied by the Palouse River was not reliable. The Mill was destroyed by fire in 1918 and was not rebuilt; the mill had not been in operation for several years when it was razed by fire.
