Description Arms of Bishop Peter Courtenay (d.1492), Bishop of Exeter and Bishop of Winchester, showing arms of See of Winchester impaling arms of Courtenay, the shield surrounded by three dolphins conjoined in annulo each vorant of the tail of the one in front, a dolphin being the heraldic device of the Courtenay family. In the top spandrels are shown three intertwined sickles, heraldic badge of the Hungerford family; in the lower spandrels are shown a garb of wheat, heraldic badge of the Peverell family. In the margins on either side are shown letters "tau" with a bell appended, symbols of St Anthony to whom the bishop had a special devotion.(A Delineation of the Courtenay Mantelpiece in the Episcopal Palace at Exeter by Roscoe Gibbs with a Biographical Notice of The Right Reverend Peter Courtenay, DD,...
