Summary[edit]

It shows a network of giant fractures in Utopia Planitia. New research links the formation of such "polygons" in this region to a former ocean in the northern lowlands of Mars. Some of the ditches show dark deposits running along the top of the ditch. It is conceivable that these are dark, fine-grained layers of ash escaping. In many places they are the source of the dark dune sands that are widespread on Mars.
