Photo shows Blizzard Atlas losses: carcasses of cattle retrieved from pond. These photos are of one carcass pile along the New Underwood Road north of Hereford, SD on 10/9/2013. There are 69 dead cattle in the pile, all retrieved from one pond. The landowner did not own any of the cattle retrieved from the water--they had all drifted several miles from the pasture they originated in. Seven people worked to remove the animals from the water and move them to a suitable burial pit. The terrain in many places where animals perished makes recovery very difficult, at best. Water quality is a concern so it was important to get the animals removed. Through the use of heavy equipment and good neighbors, the landowner was able to recover these carcasses and place them in a burial pit.
