blue flax, Linum lewisii var. lewisii, California, White Mountains, Sheep Mountain, Fishlake Valley drainage, elevation 3607 m (11835 ft). Although alpine blue flax (Linum lewisii var. alpicola) is known from this same local area, this appears to be a high-elevation plant of var. lewisii, perhaps introduced from a nearby lower-elevation population. The var. lewisii is widespread over western and central North America from Mexico to Alaska, and is sometimes said to occur in east Asia also. It is distinguished from other Asian blue flax species by its combination of homostylous flowers (styles and stamens same relative lengths in all flowers) and capitate stigmas. Also visible in this image is northern goldenrod (Solidago multiradiata). |
